Ladies Who Lunch Actually Save Money!

credit: fashion gone rogue

Wikipedia defines ladies who lunch as "slim, well-off, old-monied, well-dressed women who meet for social luncheons, usually during the working week. Typically, the women involved are married and non-working." Desperate Housewives, anyone?!

Well, it turns out you don't have to be a socialite, trophy wife, or even have a million dollar bank account to become a lady who lunches. It's about time we remove the stigma... let's go ahead and reclaim the term for ourselves now. Say it loud, say it proud... I'M A LADY WHO LUNCHES. Why?... Because there are occasions where you simply want to enjoy a good meal with friends, but you know dinner out can get expensive. Lunch is the perfect substitute for social eating when you're on a budget.

The Advantages of Being a Lady Who Lunches:

  • A lighter bill. More often than not, lunch prices are cheaper than dinner. It's not uncommon for a lunch entree to cost half the price of the identical item on a dinner menu. (Save that money for shopping! or your 401k)
  • Quicker seating time & order turn around. This means you're not waiting an hour to get seated and then another hour to get your food. (I believe Jay-Z said "I have no patience and I hate waiting" - well the same is true for me when I'm hungry)
  • Less pretense. At lunch you have greater leeway to wear whatever you please. No one is going to look at you crazy if you show up with a backpack and hiking boots or your gym clothes (of course there are a few exceptions). But if you want to get dressed up you're my kind of girl!
  • Fewer calories. Lunch portions typically aren't gargantuan so you don't have to worry about loosening up your belt during the meal, eating yourself into a food coma, or fitting into your clothes the next day. (btw, your waistline says gracias)

If you know where to look, there are a plethora of restaurants to have lunch without breaking your piggy bank right here in NYC. Some of my favorite affordable spots include

  • Thai restaurants like Qi (8th ave between 42 & 43) and Room Service (9th ave between 47 & 48 streets) both offer great lunch specials under $8 and the ambiance makes you feel like you're in much more expensive territory.
  • If you're craving falafel and thick, yummy steak fries, head to Cheeps on the Lower East Side. There isn't really any seating, but it's definitely true to name (cheap) and pretty much everything on the menu costs under $5.
  • Worijiip on 32nd street has amazing authentic Korean food. I especially enjoy their kimchi fried rice which is insanely cheap- $4.
  • Jackson Diner on University place (or the original, famous Queens location) has a lunch buffet for $9.99.

What are your favorite lunch spots in NYC? (or wherever you are around the Globe) Leave your comments below.  Bon appetit!
